Every Thanksgiving, Jennifer dreaded the question: Why don’t you talk to your mother? This year, her father, Thomas, called, urging her to come to dinner. Frustrated, Jennifer agreed but vowed to leave early.
Arriving at her childhood home, she was greeted by her father and younger sister Carly, but her mother, Sarah, remained distant. The tension between Jennifer and Sarah was palpable as they worked side by side in the kitchen, silently critiquing each other. Finally, Jennifer snapped, accusing Sarah of never being there for her. An argument ensued, and Jennifer stormed upstairs, frustrated and emotional.
In her old room, Jennifer found a doll her mother had kept, a soft reminder of her childhood. As she sat, her mother knocked and entered, apologizing for her past mistakes. They spoke honestly, and Sarah admitted her faults, expressing regret for not being there for Jennifer. After a quiet moment, Jennifer smiled faintly, ready to begin healing. “Let’s try,” she said. Sarah squeezed her hand, and they headed downstairs together to share the dinner they had both worked hard to prepare.
