When I came home early from work, I found my husband, Jason, had changed the locks on our door and left a note telling me to find somewhere else to stay. Inside, I discovered him with Mia, a coworker he’d always claimed was “just a friend.” Furious and heartbroken, I turned to my sister, Paula, who helped me realize that I had actually paid for everything in the house.
I called my lawyer, Denise, who confirmed that Jason had broken the law by locking me out. Armed with receipts for everything I’d bought, I made a plan to take back what was mine. I hired a moving company and showed up on Saturday while Jason and Mia were home.
As movers stripped the house of all my belongings—furniture, appliances, even the oven—I made sure Jason and Mia saw the receipts and heard that his lock change was illegal. I walked away feeling empowered, leaving them with nothing but humiliation.
Sometimes, I wonder if I was too harsh—but then I remember the cold birthday dinner, the note, and the betrayal. I did exactly what needed to be done.
