Ten-year-old Kevin never expected to inherit anything from his grandmother. So when her old, shabby sofa arrived, he barely reacted—until he sat on it and felt something hard under the cushion.
Lifting it, he found a small rectangular box marked “For Kevin.” Inside was a sealed envelope, legal documents, and a letter from Granny.
She explained that his father, Jerry, only returned for his inheritance and didn’t love Kevin the way he deserved. Granny had fought to keep Kevin safe, even reporting Jerry to Social Services when he neglected him. Jerry had failed to notice Kevin wandering the streets while drunk and uncaring.
Granny had devised a test to reveal Jerry’s true character. Inside the box were fake legal papers granting Jerry the inheritance—if he gave up parental rights to Kevin. If Jerry took the papers to a lawyer, Kevin would know the truth.
Kevin approached his father, showing him the papers. Jerry, his eyes greedy, rushed out to a lawyer’s office. Kevin realized Granny was right—his father cared more about money than him.
That night, Kevin knocked on the door of Denise and Miguel, the couple Granny had arranged for him to live with. “I want to stay,” he said, and they welcomed him.
Kevin smiled, feeling safe for the first time in months. Granny’s love had given him the greatest gift—real family.
