Every holiday, I cherish time with my six-year-old granddaughter, Brittany, and love making our home festive. But last holiday, I discovered a painful truth about my family. Brittany began calling me names like “old lady” and “wrinkly hag,” which she revealed she had heard from my son Todd and his wife Rachel.
Shocked and hurt, I gently corrected Brittany, but the revelation about Todd and Rachel’s attitude toward me lingered. To confirm my suspicions, I recorded their conversations and discovered they spoke of me with disdain, despite all the support I’d given them.
I confronted Todd and Rachel by playing the recording after dinner, expressing my hurt and setting boundaries. They apologized, and we agreed to work on respect and communication. This experience reinforced the importance of setting boundaries and ensuring that love and generosity are met with respect.
