Boost Wi-Fi Speed with Aluminum Foil
As more devices connect in our homes, Wi-Fi often slows, especially during peak hours. Professor James McQuiggan suggests a simple hack: place aluminum foil behind your router to improve signal strength.
How It Works
McQuiggan compares Wi-Fi signals to a sprinkler, spraying in all directions and weakening where needed most. Aluminum foil reflects the signal, directing it more effectively.
Setup:
- Take a 1-foot sheet of foil.
- Shape it into a “C” with the shiny side facing the router.
- Place it behind the router and test the signal strength using a speed test.
Research and Limitations
Dartmouth researchers confirmed this hack’s potential, boosting signals by over 50% in targeted areas. However, results may vary. While some users see improvements, others, like Brooke, found minimal change, emphasizing factors like home layout and internet plans.
Other Options
Metal objects like soda cans or baking sheets can also reflect signals. For lasting improvements, consider repositioning your router, upgrading it, or investing in a Wi-Fi extender.
Though not guaranteed, aluminum foil is a budget-friendly experiment to enhance your Wi-Fi before resorting to costly solutions.
