Mia is thrilled when her son, Jack, returns from a weekend at Grandma’s a model of discipline, but his sudden transformation makes her uneasy. She learns that Jack overheard a conversation about her being “all on her own soon” and that his father, Ethan, is about to undergo a dangerous family ritual when he turns 35. This ritual, a rite of passage for the men in his family, requires them to survive alone in the wilderness.
Mia confronts her mother-in-law, Daphne, who explains the tradition and expresses fear for Ethan’s safety. Mia then confronts Ethan, who admits that he has known about the ritual all his life but didn’t want to scare her. As the tension grows, Jack continues to help around the house, trying to protect his mom, unaware of the looming danger. Mia is left torn between her fear for Ethan and the uncertainty of how to tell Jack the truth. The family is left hanging in a fragile balance, with Mia uncertain how to prepare for the future.
