On my wedding day, my future mother-in-law, Patricia, tried to steal the spotlight by sitting between Ethan and me at the reception. After years of her controlling behavior, I had enough. When she showed up in a white rhinestone dress, and then wedged herself between us at the head table, I calmly agreed with her.
I excused myself, called the bakery, and had the wedding cake topper switched to a figure of Ethan and Patricia, arm-in-arm. When it was revealed, Patricia’s face turned crimson as I invited her to cut the cake with Ethan. The room erupted in laughter, and she was left humiliated.
Later, I canceled the marriage license, realizing Ethan and Patricia could have each other. I reclaimed my day, and had no regrets. Sometimes, showing people how absurd they are is the best way to take back control.
