He was the first man in the world to give birth – 16 years later, he looks like this

Sixteen years ago, Thomas Beatie made history as the first transgender man to give birth. Born female, Thomas transitioned and later chose to stop testosterone treatment to conceive with his then-wife, Nancy. Despite facing hate and discrimination, his story captivated the world when he became pregnant with his first child, Susan.

Thomas had four more pregnancies, raising Susan and sons Austin and Jensen. In 2008, he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, advocating for reproductive rights, emphasizing that the desire to have a child is a human right, not tied to gender.

In 2016, Thomas married Amber and blended their families, which includes Amber’s grandchild. Now in his 50s, Thomas works as a stockbroker and occasionally speaks publicly. Reflecting on his past, he acknowledges the lasting impact of his story on trans visibility and reproductive rights, despite the whirlwind of attention at the time.
