“Granny Pods” Now Allow Your Aging Parents to Live in Your Backyard

Around 30 million American households provide caregiving for adults over 50, and many will face this responsibility in the near future. While caregiving can be stressful, studies show it may be better than placing a loved one in a nursing home, where over 40% of residents report abuse and neglect.

By 2030, one in five Americans will be over 65, creating a shortage of resources. AARP’s 2015 study found that 90% of seniors prefer aging at home, but safety features like non-slip floors and grab bars are often lacking in many homes.

MEDCottage’s “Granny Pods” offer a solution: mobile, senior-friendly homes that provide dignity and safety for aging loved ones. These 12×24-foot units connect to existing plumbing and electricity and include features like pill dispensers and vital sign monitors.

While nursing home care costs can exceed $6,000 a month, a Granny Pod costs between $85,000 and $125,000—an investment that can save money and keep families close.
