A species once on the brink of extinction now has hope, thanks to a breakthrough in Australia. Biologists at Mount Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary have discovered a litter of young western quolls, a marsupial carnivore that had been nearly wiped out since European settlement.
Once widespread across Australia, western quolls are now found only in small groups in the southwest. After months of efforts to reintroduce the species, the baby quolls’ successful birth signals that the animals are thriving and adapting to their new environment.
Researchers are optimistic that the species will soon flourish again across Australia.
