Who brings their parents to a first date? Jacob did—along with a list of outrageous questions that felt more like a job interview. We’d hit it off online, and I thought he might be “the one,” but when we met at Coffee Beanz, his parents, Linda and Patrick, were sitting with him, ready to grill me.
Linda pulled out a questionnaire, asking about everything from my income to my stance on prenuptial agreements. I tried to keep my cool, but this was ridiculous. So, I excused myself and returned with my own set of questions, asking about their control issues and Jacob’s inability to choose his own partner.
Jacob lost it, and his parents stormed off—without paying their bill. I called them out, making sure they covered it before leaving. Later, Jacob texted, claiming I was cruel. I texted back, “Good luck with your family’s standards. Try job recruitment sites next time.”
As I walked away, I felt relieved. I’d dodged a bullet—and Sarah and I had a good laugh imagining Linda’s spreadsheet of potential wives.
