Ray raised an eyebrow as Colleen made boxed mac and cheese. “From a box?”
“It’s for Ben. He’s been so quiet,” she replied, stirring.
Ray rubbed her shoulders. “He’s only been with us a day. This might help.”
They called Ben, who quickly ate and returned to his room. Concerned, they followed—and found him feeding a baby.
“Who’s this?” Colleen asked, shocked.
“She’s my sister,” Ben replied. “Well, sort of. She’s the new foster at my old home. I couldn’t leave her.”
When Colleen suggested calling Mrs. Campbell, their foster coordinator, Ben protested, revealing his former foster parents were abusive. Ray reassured him they’d help, and he eventually fell asleep, clutching the baby.
The next day, a suspicious truck slowed outside, and later, Mrs. Campbell arrived with the Franklins, demanding the baby. Ray and Alana, a social worker, defended Ben and the baby. The situation escalated, but with police intervention, the Franklins and Mrs. Campbell were implicated in abuse.
Days later, Alana confirmed the Franklins’ arrest. She offered to help Colleen and Ray adopt Ben’s baby “sister,” Grace. The family embraced a fresh start, filled with hope and healing.
