Our Dad Asked the Whole Family to Buy Mom Kitchen Utensils for Christmas as She’s a ‘Horrible Cook’ — We Decided to Outplay Him

When my brother Seth and I overheard Dad calling Mom “lazy” and mocking her cooking, we decided to teach him a lesson. What began as a simple Christmas gift list turned into a plot to show Dad how much we appreciated Mom.

Mom works tirelessly—cooking, cleaning, and taking care of everything—while Dad lounges around, watching TV. So, after hearing Dad insult her, we came up with a plan: we emailed our family to request gifts for Mom that she’d love, not the kitchen gadgets Dad suggested. Instead, we asked for a designer purse, a spa gift card, and more.

On Christmas morning, Dad unwrapped one fishing rod after another—his reaction turning from confusion to frustration. Meanwhile, Mom gleamed as she received thoughtful gifts she truly wanted. When Dad demanded to know why, Seth revealed he’d overheard him badmouthing Mom. Mom was furious, and she handed Dad a fishing rod, saying he’d have plenty of time to “joke” while fishing.

The rest of the day was perfect, with Mom basking in love while Dad sulked. Later, she thanked us for showing her appreciation, and we made sure Dad learned his lesson. From then on, he never dared call her lazy again.
