My girlfriend Rachel and I were happy—until everything changed overnight. She sent a message, telling me to stay away, with no explanation. I was left confused and searching for answers.
We’d been together for almost two years, and I’d only met her father once, a tense encounter where he didn’t approve of our relationship. Rachel, 24, had always told me her father was strict and controlling, but I never understood the extent of it.
One morning, after a perfect evening, Rachel suddenly stopped replying to my texts and calls. She then sent a message telling me to never contact her again. Devastated, I searched for answers, realizing the messages didn’t feel like her. Her father must have been involved.
I went to her hotel to find her, but her father claimed she left for abroad. Something didn’t add up. A maid revealed Rachel hadn’t left in weeks, and I discovered security footage of her father carrying her unconscious. I followed him to Room 113, where I found Rachel unconscious, her body weak, surrounded by medicine.
Her father revealed that Rachel was seriously ill, and doctors couldn’t help her. He had pushed her away from me to protect her from the pain of our relationship. Rachel had wanted to keep it from me, fearing it would hurt me.
I sat beside Rachel, holding her hand as I opened a letter she wrote. “If you’re reading this, it means I’m gone,” it began. “The time I spent with you was the only time I felt normal. I love you more than anything.”
I cried, holding her close. My Rachel.
