I never expected to see my high school teacher again, but there he was, calling my name in the middle of a crowded farmers’ market. What started as a casual conversation quickly turned into something I never could have predicted—something that changed my life forever.
Mr. Harper, as I knew him, made history come alive. He saw potential in me when no one else did, even suggesting I consider law school after reading my essay on the Declaration of Independence. I didn’t think much of it back then, but his words stuck with me.
Eight years later, I was back in my hometown when I ran into him again—this time, he was just Leo. He was teaching high school English now, but his presence was still the same, only lighter. We talked for hours, reconnecting over coffee and sharing dreams.
A few dinners later, the connection between us was undeniable, and before I knew it, we were exchanging vows under fairy lights in my parents’ backyard.
That night, Leo gave me a small leather notebook. Inside, I found my teenage dream journal. Leo had kept it all these years, and he believed in those dreams—my dream of opening a bookstore café—more than I did.
With his support, I left my corporate job and made that dream a reality. The bookstore café became a hit, and now, as I watch Leo chase our toddler, I can’t help but think back to that journal.
“Just thinking,” I say, smiling as Leo catches my eye. “I really did marry the right teacher.”
“Damn right, you did,” he grins back.
