Rescue teams are battling freezing temperatures and strong currents to recover survivors from a devastating midair collision between a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines flight near Washington, D.C. The crash, which occurred on January 29, 2025, involved a Bombardier CRJ700 passenger jet and a Black Hawk conducting a training mission, leaving both aircraft submerged in the Potomac River.
The collision disrupted air traffic, forcing 19 flights to be diverted. Video footage shows both planes engulfed in flames before crashing. The search continues for survivors, with 64 people on the commercial flight and three on the helicopter. Authorities have not confirmed fatalities, but the situation remains dire.
Among the passengers were U.S. and Russian figure skaters, making the tragedy even more personal for many. The FBI’s dive team is assisting with recovery, and officials are focusing on saving lives as they navigate hazardous conditions. This marks the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2009, and the investigation is ongoing.
