Underwear is something we wear daily, but we often overlook its details. For instance, many don’t know the purpose of the hole in boxer shorts or the small bow on women’s underwear.
The bow, while ornamental, is thought to have a historical origin. Some believe it dates back to when underwear was fastened with a ribbon, which was tied into a bow at the front for convenience. However, there’s little evidence to support this theory.
Before elastic was invented, people wore loose drawers or “braies,” fastened with a drawstring. As women’s underpants became more ornate in the 19th century, bows may have been added as a decorative touch, possibly leftover from when drawstrings were used. Alternatively, it could have simply been added as a charming design feature.
