Valarie Watts was devastated after her son Noah was stillborn in July. In her grief, she sold most of the items she’d bought for him, but couldn’t part with his crib. During a yard sale, retired craftsman Gerald Kumpula bought the crib for $2, planning to repurpose it into a bench. After learning of Valarie’s loss, he and his wife, Lorene, who had also lost a grandchild, decided to return the transformed crib as a gift.
A week later, they gave Valarie a beautiful bench made from the crib. Valarie was deeply touched, feeling comforted by the thoughtful gesture. She placed the bench in her living room, near a shelf with Noah’s mementos.
For Valarie, the bench became a symbol of healing, a place to reflect on Noah and feel his presence. Gerald, who declined payment, said helping others was its own reward. As Valarie prepares to marry and raise her daughter, Nevaeh, the bench provides solace, reminding her that everything will be okay.
