Losing a loved one is a universal experience, and for many, their memory lingers in dreams. Dreaming about the deceased can carry deep meaning, often aiding in the grieving process.
Patrick McNamara, a neuroscientist, calls these “visitation dreams,” where the deceased appear alive and at peace. He and others suggest these dreams help heal emotional wounds. Studies support this, finding that such dreams often include themes like memories, messages, or depictions of the deceased in a healthy, peaceful state.
Researchers have also found that dreaming of loved ones can strengthen faith in an afterlife and maintain a sense of connection. Psychologist Jennifer E. Shorter identified key traits of visitation dreams: the deceased appear healthier, convey peace, and the dreams feel harmonious and meaningful.
Have you ever had a dream like this? What did it mean to you?
