Anxiety is a pervasive feeling that can be hard to trace to its root cause. While it’s not new—discussed by figures like Hippocrates and Freud—it has surged among young people today, partly due to social media and information overload.
About 19% of U.S. adults and 7% of children experience anxiety disorders, with many symptoms starting before age 21. Generation Y, often called the “age of desperation,” faces unique pressures from technology, overly protective parenting, and endless choices, leading to decision fatigue and heightened anxiety. Social media amplifies this through FOMO and constant comparisons, worsening mental health.
Interestingly, neuroscientists in the U.K. have identified a song, “Weightless” by Marconi Union, that reduces anxiety by 65%. Designed with sound therapists, it slows heart rate and lowers stress hormones. So effective, it’s even advised not to listen to it while driving.
