15 Things You Should Never Plug Into A Power Strip

Overheating power strips pose a fire risk, especially with high-wattage devices like toasters, space heaters, and air conditioners. Never use an indoor power strip in damp areas like kitchens or laundry rooms, and ensure the devices plugged into it don’t exceed the strip’s maximum wattage (typically 1,800 watts for a 15-amp strip, or up to 2,400 watts for a 20-amp strip).

Avoid plugging the following devices into power strips:

  1. Refrigerators & Microwaves – These high-power devices should be plugged directly into an outlet.
  2. Coffee Makers & Slow Cookers – These appliances need more power than a strip can provide.
  3. Kitchen Appliances – Items like toaster ovens and electric skillets can cause overheating.
  4. Hair-Care Appliances – Use a GFCI outlet for safety when using hair tools.
  5. Air Conditioners & Sump Pumps – Require their own outlets to avoid overloading.
  6. Air Compressors & Power Tools – These high-power tools should not be plugged into a strip.
  7. Washing Machines – Connect directly to a wall socket to prevent overheating.
  8. Portable Heaters – They can overheat power strips when used for extended periods.
  9. Gaming Equipment – Ensure the power strip’s wattage is sufficient for all devices.

Additionally, never “daisy-chain” multiple power strips or use extension cords with them. Always check the wattage rating to avoid overloading.
