For our 40th wedding anniversary, my wife and I planned a dream getaway to Maine—just the two of us. But when our daughter, Jane, found out, she tried to guilt-trip us into letting her family join. She manipulated my wife into considering it, but I put my foot down: this trip was for us.
As the trip approached, Jane’s demands grew—snacks for the kids, pool duty, and even asking us to handle bedtime so she and her husband could party. That’s when I realized our anniversary was becoming their vacation with us as babysitters.
I confronted Jane and, despite her outrage, secretly switched our tickets back to Maine. When we arrived, I informed Jane, and she was furious, accusing us of ruining their vacation. Though Jane and Nick were upset, our trip was everything we hoped for—quiet, romantic, and stress-free.
When we returned, Jane ignored us, but I had no regrets. Sometimes, setting boundaries is the best way to teach a lesson.
